BEN MORELLO AND MEGAN MICHAELSON TAKE THE TITLES

Telemark skiers from Norway to Alaska descended upon Crested Butte this weekend for a dynamic rendition of the 12th Anniversary U.S. Extreme Freeskiing Telemark Championships. The recipe of two sunny, bluebird days, two hair-raising venues and 78 extreme skiers concocted an electrifying brew of freeheeling action. With the best tele skiers in the world attempting to fiercely muscle their way to the top of the podium, the competition was as steep as the terrain. In the end, Ben Morello of Crested Butte, Colorado and Megan Michaelson of Boulder, Colorado powered their way through to reign as the 2008 champions.

Final Day 11th ANNIVERSARY U.S. EXTREME FREESKIING TELEMARK CHAMPIONSHIPS

MT. CRESTED BUTTE, CO- Back in the home of the re-birth of the telemark turn, the fifty-one competitors that were allowed to continue ramped up the action in the 11th Annual U.S. Extreme Freeskiing Telemark Championships finals and superfinals. Leaving sparks flying out on the snow in the off-camber, double fall line rock fest called Angle Gully, Dylan Crossman of Randolph, Vermont and Martha Burley of Fernie, British Columbia knee-bent themselves into first place finishes.

Taking the Headwall for the second time in this competition forced athletes' creativity to make then stand out for the judges and the crowd. Spring conditions sharply separated skill levels as freeheelers had to combat changing visibility and snowpack. With 26 skiers eliminated from Friday's field, it was the best of the best. Numbers were again cut in half and 26 of the burliest bent it out for the exciting superfinals.

Open Window: Open windows. The moment wherein opportunities open to allow for extraordinary experiences…or per Lorenzo Worster, “As we go through life we are presented with windows of opportunity. It is only when we jump through these windows that we can find out what adventures lie beyond.”

TGP was there to capture a variety of open windows from an early season storm at Jackson Hole, the Reno Tahoe Freeheel Open telemark competition in the California Sierra, steep and deep Utah powder, these are just a few of the choices presented to the athletes in Open Windows.

The show gives an insider's view of telemark skiing following modern freeheel skiers as they pick and choose what opportunities to grasp and where those choices lead them. Great Season for Nat Ross and Tough Girl Productions

It is common knowledge that top-flight competitive athletes set goals they wish to attain through their season. Generally it involves going undefeated, winning a championship, and hopefully set some records along the way. Results don’t always work out that way but sometimes they do.

Try this one on for size, this year with the exception of one race, Nat Ross won every race he entered! Along the way Nat won the three 24 Hour National Points Series races he showed up at. First came the 24 Hours of Temecula in April where he broke the course record that had previously been held by Tinker Juarez. In September he won the 24 Hours of Landahl and eventually claimed the National Points Series Championship in style in October by winning the 24 Hours of Moab.

How tough are you? EJ Poplawski's version

EJ Poplawski is a telemark skier who while competing at the highest level suffered a crash that not only ended his competition, but changed his life. On March 26, 2005, at the 10th Annual Extreme Telemark Freeskiing Championships in Crested Butte, Colorado, EJ was skiing in the final on the way to a podium finish.

His choice of line down the venue mirrored eventual champion Dylan Crossman’s line through the darkly named “Body Bag”. The crux of the ski-line starts on a large boulder with a 20 foot drop onto a small snowfield which ramps over another cliff band and into an aspen grove. He succeeded in cleaning the two mandatory airs when one of his T-bolted skis snapped in two. EJ instinctively shifted his weight onto his right ski’s outside edge and tried to carve a right turn through the aspen grove.

2006/2007 Schedule

The ski season is officially upon us with Silverton Mountain, CO claiming this year's start. Locally we saw two solid days of snowfall and friends made it out to Loveland Pass for some early skiing. The sun has returned and right now at the TGP offices in Frisco we are enjoying a wonderful indian summer with bluebird skies, snow capped mountains and yellow aspens leaves quaking in a gentle breeze.

Big changes in TGP this year have caused some confusion so some quick facts to set the record straight. TGP's video production side of the house has been busy creating "Open Windows" a stand alone TV show set to begin airing on RSN as the ski season progresses. So instead of one 1 hour movie look for several 30 minute shows this winter. The world premiere is set for November 17, 2006 at Clif Bar in Berkley, CA.

Tough Guy Productions schedule of equipment demos and competitive events is shaping up to create the largest telemark weekend in the United States this season as part of the Reno-Tahoe Freeheel Open slated for March 1 - 4.

The 4 day weekend will include daily equipment demos and a 72-hour film makers competition, the US Nationals Tele-Cross, and return of the Big Mountain Compeition. We are working on some evening entertainment as well.
